After months of gruelling interviews, you finally receive the call that you have got the job. It is an exhilarating feeling that you should definitely cherish. However, as your joining date draws nearer, you start feeling anxious. At the job, you will face new responsibilities and pressures. There will be a lot of eyes on you as the new recruit. The management will be watching closely to gauge your skills and character. In such a situation, it would be nice to have some guidance, wouldn’t it? Don’t worry, we have you covered!

Here are some tips that will help you perform at a high level in your new job:

Observe and Learn First

When you start off at a new company it is must that you should know how to perform well at your new job. It is essential not simply to thrust yourself into the work with unbridled enthusiasm. It would be prudent to get a lay of the land first. Observe the inner workings of the company and note down everything you learn. Pay attention to the way the bosses prefer to have the work handled. Once you have taken a week to understand how things work, then you can dive into your new assignments and projects. The week will also help you acclimatize to the new environment.

Learn the Company Culture

Everything isn’t about work. Socializing with your new colleagues and forming personal bonds with them will also be essential in learning how to perform well at your new job. Observe the culture of the company so that you will be able to integrate yourself into it. Notice when people like to take their coffee break or which day they go out to eat lunch. Offer to work overtime along with some of your new colleagues to help them out and make friends in the process. It is important to have good relations with your colleagues as you will be seeing them every working day.

Don’t Leave First or Last

You might think that working late hours every day will impress your boss. And it may, but overworking can also cause burnout, stress and poor performance. So it is important to work the right amount of hours. If you are the last person to leave the office every day, the boss will start expecting you to work late forever. But if you are the first to leave every day, that’s no good either. The boss might start thinking that you are lazy and like to avoid work. The key is to leave the office at the midpoint.

Set Expectations

While you take the first week to settle in and get an idea of how things function at the office, you should also sit down with your boss and find out his/her expectations from you and this should be your priority while you’re on your learning phase of how to perform well at your new job. The sooner you learn this, the quicker you will be able to start working according to those expectations. Ask your boss what a successful first month looks like to him and work towards it. Having concrete goals will help you stay focused and perform at a higher level. And when you manage to reach those expectations, your boss will be really pleased with you.

There is a lot of pressure to perform well in your new job. Some missteps or mistakes will be unavoidable, but don’t let that shake your confidence. Observe the inner functioning of the company, integrate yourself in the culture of your new office and have an open dialogue with your boss regarding his expectations from you. If you follow these simple tips, you will be able to perform well at your new job and impress your boss.
