A short history
The Women’s College began as a girls’ school opened by Sheikh Abdullah and Waheed Jahan Begum in October 1906, and it traditionally had its own students’ union. When elections returned in 2011 under the Lyngdoh rules, the separate union was dropped, and Women’s College students voted in AMUSU instead. In September 2012, Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah said he would restore it, calling its removal a misreading of the Lyngdoh report, which allows a separate union where a college has its own identity and campus. He also said the WCSU President sits on the AMUSU executive committee.
Today, first to third-year undergraduate women vote in the WCSU election, while fourth-year undergraduates and postgraduate and PhD students vote in AMUSU. The WCSU President does not have a seat on the AMU Court. The last union was elected in 2018, and terms ended in June 2019. Read more about the women who shaped AMU.
