Sir Syed Day is celebrated every year on 17 October, the birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College at Aligarh, the institution that became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. AMU marks the day with prayers, a tribute at his grave, a commemorative function and awards, while alumni groups hold their own events worldwide.

Who was Sir Syed Ahmad Khan?

According to AMU, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was born on 17 October 1817 in Delhi. He started his working life as a civil servant, and the events of 1857 became a turning point in his thinking about education and the future of Indian Muslims.

He went on to set up the MAO College at Aligarh in 1877. The college grew over the next four decades and, by 1920, had become Aligarh Muslim University. Sir Syed died on 27 March 1898 and was buried on the premises of the university mosque in Sir Syed Hall, as recorded on the AMU website.

In 2026, Sir Syed Day falls on Saturday, 17 October, and marks his 209th birth anniversary.

Why is Sir Syed Day celebrated at AMU and by Aligs worldwide?

For AMU, the day is a founder’s day. It is the one occasion in the academic year when the university formally recalls the person whose idea led to the campus, its residential halls and its traditions. Speakers usually return to his ideas on modern education, scientific thinking and learning in English alongside Oriental languages.

For alumni, known as Aligs, the day works as a reunion. AMU graduates are spread across India, the Gulf, North America, Europe and Australia, and alumni associations in many of these places organise a Sir Syed Day function every year. For many former students, it is the main event in the alumni calendar.

The day also gives the university a chance to look at where it is heading. At the 2022 function, as reported by LiveLaw, a guest of honour described the occasion as a time to reflect on the university’s direction while keeping its traditions.

How is Sir Syed Day observed at AMU?

The exact programme changes from year to year, but reports from AMU and the press show a fairly settled pattern. The description below is based on the 2020 schedule reported by Madhyamam, the 2022 function reported by LiveLaw and the 2025 hall event recorded on the AMU website.

Morning: Quran khwani and tribute at the mazaar

The day starts early with Quran khwani, a collective recitation of the Quran. This is followed by a floral tribute at Sir Syed’s mazaar (grave) on campus. In 2020, for example, the Quran khwani was scheduled for 6 am and the floral tribute for 7 am.

The commemorative function and the chief guest

The main event is the Sir Syed Day commemorative function. The Vice Chancellor gives the welcome address, and a chief guest, usually a public figure, jurist or scholar, delivers the commemoration address on Sir Syed’s life and ideas. Guests of honour, faculty members and students also speak.

Past chief guests give a sense of the range. In 2020, when the function was held online for the first time, former Union Minister Satya Pal Malik, then Governor of Meghalaya, gave the commemorative speech. In 2022, Prof Tahir Mahmood, former Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, delivered the address, with Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari and Chandan Sinha of the National Archives of India as guests of honour.

The chief guest for 2026 should be confirmed from the official AMU announcement closer to the date.

Sir Syed Excellence Awards

The function has also been used to present the Sir Syed Excellence Awards. In 2020, the international award went to historian Dr Gail Minault and the national award went to Anjuman-I-Islam, the Mumbai-based educational body. AMU also named a Young Researcher of the Year that year.

All India Essay Writing Competition

Winners of the All India Essay Writing Competition, held as part of the Sir Syed Day programme, receive their prizes and certificates during the celebrations. In 2020, the prizes were given out virtually. Students who have taken part should check the official AMU website for the current year’s result and prize details.

Exhibitions on Sir Syed

The Maulana Azad Library usually puts up an exhibition of books and photographs related to Sir Syed. In 2022, the Vice Chancellor opened such an exhibition at Sir Syed House, organised jointly by the library and the Sir Syed Academy. In 2020, the exhibition was moved online.

Events in the residential halls

AMU’s halls of residence hold their own programmes. The AMU website records that Viqarul Mulk Hall marked Sir Syed Day on 17 October 2025 with a Quran recitation, talks on Sir Syed’s life and educational thinking, and a dinner for guests and residents. The Sir Syed Day dinner in the halls is a long-standing campus custom.

Live webcast

AMU has also streamed the celebrations online. A live webcast page for Sir Syed Day on 17 October 2025 was published on the university website, which helps alumni and families who cannot travel to Aligarh.

How do AMU alumni celebrate Sir Syed Day abroad?

Alumni associations do not always hold their functions on 17 October itself. Many pick a weekend in October, November or even later, depending on the availability of venues and guests. The format is usually a dinner with speeches, awards and cultural items.

In Qatar, for instance, the AMU Alumni Association Qatar marked Sir Syed Day 2025 with a function presided over by the Indian ambassador, with Member of Parliament Iqra Hasan Choudhary as chief guest, as reported by Gulf Times. The event included a book launch and an “Aligarian of the Year” award. Alumni groups in other Gulf countries, Australia, New Zealand and North America hold similar events.

Within India, alumni associations in cities and states also host Sir Syed Day functions, often inviting senior Aligs or public figures to speak about the university and its founder.

What should students and visitors know before Sir Syed Day 2026?

  • Check the official schedule: AMU publishes the programme, venue and timings on its website in the days before 17 October.
  • Morning events start early: Quran khwani and the tribute at the mazaar take place in the early hours.
  • Hall programmes differ: Each hall plans its own talks and dinner, so residents should follow notices from their provost office.
  • Watch online if you cannot attend: The university has used a live webcast in recent years.
  • Alumni dates vary: If you are an Alig abroad, check with your local alumni association, as their function may fall on a later date.
