More than 800 eye doctors spent three days at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College for AligEyeCon 2026, the 60th annual conference of the UP State Ophthalmological Society (UPSOS). For the Diamond Jubilee edition, the society chose AMU, and JNMC’s own Dr Mohammad Saquib went home with an award for his cornea work.

- UPSOS Lifetime Achievement Award: Prof. F. A. Jilani and Dr. Rekha Goel
- UPSOS President’s Appreciation Award, Young Achiever in Cornea Services: Dr. Mohammad Saquib, Department of Ophthalmology, AMU, for his work on corneal care and corneal blindness in western Uttar Pradesh
- Dr. Javed Ali of LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, was also honoured
What happened over three days
The programme had around 300 presentations. Five international, 75 national and 256 state-level faculty members gave lectures. The highlight was a set of deferred live surgeries on rare and challenging cases, which took delegates through the surgical techniques and the clinical decisions behind them.
There was hands-on work too. Nearly 90 ophthalmologists went through wet-lab training and a Surgical Skill Transfer Course supervised by Prof. S. M. Zakir. Dr. Naheed Akhtar coordinated the scientific programme.

Who ran it
Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon was Chief Guest at the inauguration, with Dr. Chitra Ramamurthy and Dr. Santosh G. Honavar as Guests of Honour. She thanked UPSOS for bringing the jubilee meet to AMU and spoke about the Institute of Ophthalmology’s teaching and patient care.
