Presidential candidates will address voters from the roof of the Union Hall two days before polling. The report did not list all the posts on which elections will be held.
What led to the announcement
Students had been demanding the restoration of the students’ union and a fixed date for elections. An indefinite hunger strike began on 21 September 2026, Amar Ujala reported. Students say no union election has been held for about eight years.
The listed demands included a set timetable for polls, the appointment of a chief election officer, withdrawal of action taken against students, proper medical care for those on hunger strike, and an impartial inquiry into action taken after a protest at Duck Point on 28 September.

The protest grew over the following days. On 1 October, students shut the Maulana Azad Library. On 4 October, police detained four students during a sit-in, after which protesters shut all four campus gates, according to the newspaper. Azad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekhar Azad posted his support for the demand on 3 October.
On 7 October, the 17th day, a student delegation met the university administration without result. A message then spread that the university could be closed sine die. Proctor Prof. Mohammad Naved Khan said he had no information about any such decision and called it a rumour. The newspaper reported that the administration denied any sine die decision.
Hunger striker’s health and the teachers’ view
The health of hunger striker Yasir Fahad was a concern through the week. Amar Ujala reported that his blood pressure had dropped and that the principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Prof. Anjum Parvez, had recommended hospital admission. A medical team reached the protest site late at night, but he declined to go with them.
The AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) also weighed in. Its president, Prof. Tufail Ahmad, said the Vice-Chancellor should send a senior teacher acceptable to all sides to talk to the students, and said classes were being affected.
New Proctor appointed
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon approved the appointment of Prof. Mohammad Nafees Ahmad Ansari of the Department of Political Science as Proctor. The order cites Section 19(3) of the AMU Act, 1920, and Statute 12, with the approval of the Executive Council. He will hold charge for two years or until further orders, in addition to his current duties.
Prof. Ansari joined AMU as a lecturer in 1994, became a reader in 2003 and a professor in 2009. The university order did not give a reason for the change, and no official statement on it was reported.
