Aligarh Muslim University appointed Prof. Mohd. Nafees Ahmad Ansari of the Department of Political Science as its new Proctor on 9 October 2026. He replaces Prof. Mohammad Naved Khan. The official notification makes the appointment effective immediately, for two years or until further orders, Millat Times reported.

The change came on the same day the university announced the schedule for the Students’ Union election, after an 18-day student protest on campus. The election will be the first in about eight years. Read the full AMUSU election 2026 schedule here.

Four student demands accepted

According to the report, the administration accepted four demands raised by protesting students:

  1. Restoration of the Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU).
  2. Appointment of a new Proctor.
  3. Appointment of a Chief Election Officer for the Students’ Union elections.
  4. Revocation of student activist Yasir Fahad’s suspension.

What students said

Student activist Yasir Fahad welcomed the Vice-Chancellor’s decision. He thanked students who faced suspension, FIRs or jail during the protests, and called it a significant moment for the AMU student community, the report said.

What happens next

Voter lists will be displayed at the deans’ offices on 26 October, nominations will be filed on 29 October, and voting and counting will take place on 5 November. The Aligarian will update this page as the university issues further notices.
