A day after students staged a demonstration at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) opposing a proposal to make Nita Ambani, Executive Director at Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a visiting professor, the oil and gas company’s spokesperson confirmed that the news was false.

In a statement to press agency ANI, the spokesperson said that the news is fake, and “no proposal or invitation to form her visiting lecturer of BHU has been received” nor has it been extended to Nita Ambani from the university.

Soon after the University took to Twitter to release an official statement addressing the reports.

In a statement tweeted, the press release said that BHU hasn’t taken any ‘official or administrative decision’ on selecting Mrs Nita Ambani as the visiting professor.

The release also noted that any permission regarding selecting a visiting faculty requires permission from the Academic Council, and no such request has been given by the authorising committee.

On Tuesday, Shubham Tiwari, a student protesting, told PTI that he would instead have an individual visit who has set an example of women empowerment. The PTI report had also quoted Prof Nidhi Sharma, coordinator of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Development, “the proposal to make Nita Ambani a visiting professor has been sent to the authorities… She is a woman entrepreneur. If she joins our centre, the women of Purvanchal will get the benefit of her experience.”
