India’s own NIRF 2026 list had not been published as of 9 October 2026, so AMU’s latest national rank is still the one from NIRF 2025: 10th among universities.

This is an explainer on where AMU stands in rankings right now, based on the official NIRF portal, the QS website and dated news reports. It will be updated once NIRF 2026 is released.

QS World University Rankings 2027

The QS World University Rankings 2027 were released in June 2026. On the QS website, AMU is listed in the 1001 to 1200 band for both the 2027 and 2026 editions. Beyond the top few hundred, QS groups universities in bands rather than giving each a single position.

IIT Delhi was the top Indian institution in QS 2027 at 118th, followed by IIT Bombay at 134th, according to reports on the release. The University of Delhi, at 322nd, was the highest-placed Indian university outside the IITs and IISc.

When is NIRF 2026 expected?

The Ministry of Education has not announced a date. As of 9 October 2026, the NIRF portal lists rankings only up to 2025. NIRF results have usually come out between June and September in recent years, with the 2025 list released in September 2025.

When the 2026 list comes out, the main points to watch for AMU are whether it holds a top 10 place among universities and whether the Law, Medical and Engineering ranks improve. We will report the results in AMU Updates. Applicants comparing courses can also see our Students’ Corner.
