What is the purpose of my life?

This common question that occurs in the mind of each individual at some point in their lives has become so extraordinary to answer that numerous films, books, and blogs have enveloped this very question.

Each of us wants to discover the meaning of our lives. More importantly, we want to achieve something valuable. The same goes with our professional life; each of us desires to build a successful career.

But, all of us face the same obstacle – What do I want to become? Is it a doctor? Or is it an engineer? Is it a teacher? Or a historian? An author or a singer?

Why Don't I Know What I Want To Become?

It is perfectly normal to encounter these concerns. At times, you might discover yourself self-doubting.

However, certain questions can clear your mind from these skepticisms and help you realize what you want to do in your life.

So, here are the 4 questions you should ask yourself when you don’t know what you want to become. Reminder– Be honest with yourself, and it is better to take some time to contemplate it than just to answer right away!

1. What is my passion?

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you”- Oprah Winfrey.

Truly, passion works like fuel in our lives.

Discovering your passion is exceptionally significant. When you know what you are passionate about, it becomes a guiding factor in evolving your professional life.

Your passion makes you enthusiastic and hard-working towards your objective. Moreover, a job defined by passion will always keep you happy and motivated. And when a major part of people’s life is spent on working, this is an enormous plus point.

When professions are driven by passion, they unfold a sense of contentment and accomplishment. Remember the motto “Follow your Passion.”

2. If I was leading an ideal life, what would I be doing?

“Work to become, not to acquire.” – Elbert Hubbard

If you had an exemplary life– with all the time and money the world can give, what is it that you would be pursuing?

This instance can help you to recognize your ambitions. It does not imply that you need all the worldly things to follow your passion.

Instead, passion is a means of finding out a career that is fulfilling. When you have no constraints to deter you from seeking your goals, you uncover what it is that you really want in your life. Often, we do not think out of the box. We are too tangled in the errands and worries of our daily lives that we sometimes curb our dreams as well.

Moreover, most of the time, people are involved with popular career paths, that they tend to overlook several career choices that are not common. Trying out new things is a good way to find what you want to become!

3. What is it that I do not prefer?

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” – Confucius

Another critical question is – what are the things you do not like? This depends on the various elements of your personality. For example- whether you are an introvert or extrovert will determine the kind of environment you are comfortable working in.

Certain things in every individual’s life are not just their cup of tea. Some may not like public speaking; others may not prefer long meetings or social interaction, monotonous paperwork or repetitive work, etc. Therefore, all of us have different inclinations when it comes to the working environment.

4. What are my most outstanding achievements?

“Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out.” – John Wooden

What is it that you consider the greatest accomplishment of your life? When you achieve something you really admire, there is this tremendous feeling of contentment.

Why not mold this feat into your career path so that you have a job that is fulfilling?

You can even ask your friends and family to help you recognize this. Think of your past happenings and try to discover a thing you are really proud of. It can be big victories like winning marathons or small achievements like learning to play a guitar or piano. You need to figure out the activities that you adored as a child or teenager.
