The Department of Commerce, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized a workshop on ‘Plagiarism’ which was conducted by Dr. Nabi Hasan (Librarian, Maulana Azad Library, AMU).

Dr. Hasan discussed how some authors through wrongful appropriation and stealing of another author’s language, thoughts, ideas, expressions claim as one’s own original work.. Plagiarism is considered as an academic dishonesty and a breach of ethics, said Dr. Hasan.

Professor Nawab Ali Khan (Dean, Faculty of Commerce and the Convener of the workshop) delivered the welcome address.

Dr. Shamim Ansari, Dr. Mohd Shadab Khan, Dr. Rana Zehra Masood, Dr. Naghma Azhar, Dr. Lamaan Sami, Dr. Firdous Ikram and Dr. Mohd Shoaib were also present. Over 120 research scholars and 10 post-doctoral fellows attended the workshop.

Professor Sheeba Hamid proposed the vote of thanks, while Dr. Sheema Tarab conducted the programme.

Prof Mohd Mohsin Khan, Prof S M Immamul Haque, Prof S Hussain Ashraf, Prof Nasir Zameer Qureshi, Prof Nafees A Khan, Dr. M Asif Khan distributed mementos and certificates to the winners of the poster-presentation competition held during the International Conference on ‘Tourism.’

·Dept of Geography organizes National Conference on ‘Climate Change: Sustainable Agriculture and Environment’

“All the countries need an integrated approach to thwart the scourge of climate change that affects our agriculture, ecosystems, health, and biodiversity,” said Professor Tariq Mansoor while inaugurating a national conference on Climate Change: Sustainable agriculture and Environment organized by the Department of Geography Aligarh Muslim University today.

“The issue remains controversial as there are allegations by some countries that the data related to climate change is been manipulated,” said the Vice-Chancellor adding that the issue needs to be discussed in a dispassionate manner.

Talking about the threat on biodiversity, Prof Mansoor said that we need to find ways for the wildlife survival and to maintain the water level. “Natural systems are vulnerable to climate change because of their limited adaptive capacity and some of these systems may undergo significant and irreversible damage,” he added.

Prof Mansoor discussed the importance of preserving agricultural land, having an eco-friendly environment, clean energy, the role of NGOs, public awareness and harnessing solar and wind energy. “We are proud that AMU has taken a lead in clean energy initiatives among universities in India by installing solar power plants,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, the Chief-Guest, Dr. K J Ramesh (Director General of Meteorological Department, Government of India) said that since United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992, countries have been meeting regularly to discuss the issue and to find ways of saving the planet.

“We are living through one of the most disruptive moments in modern human history, as the early impacts of climate change coincide with the onset of massive economic, technological, and social transformation,” said Dr Ramesh adding that in this period of extraordinary challenge and obligation, it would be wrong to become indecisive or to consider no longer pursuing the goals that to date have driven climate action.

“It will be a grave mistake to abandon the target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, as close to 200 countries have promised to aim for in the landmark Paris agreement on climate change,” said Dr. Ramesh.

The Guest-of-Honour, Prof R B Singh (Vice President, International Geographical Union) said that there is a big gap between the academia and policy makers on climate change and it is hoped that with this conference, the gap can be bridged.

He added that agriculture both contributes to climate change and is affected by climate change and we need to reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions from agriculture and adapt its food-production system to cope with climate change.

“Given the importance of food, a further reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions from agriculture remains quite challenging and nevertheless, there is still potential to further reduce the greenhouse-gas emissions linked to food production,” said Prof Singh.

During the welcome address, Prof Ateeque Ahmad (Chairperson, Department of Geography and Convener of Conference) said that there is an alarming situation in front of us as crops needing suitable soil, water, sunlight, and heat to grow are getting affected with warmer air temperatures over large parts of the world.

Six books were released on the occasion. They were Dynamics of Climate Change and Sustainable Environment (Edited by Prof Ateeque Ahmad, Prof S Najmul Islam Hashmi and Prof Shahab Fazal), Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security (Edited by Prof Ateeque Ahmad, Prof Jabir Hasan Khan and Prof Shamsul Haque Siddiqui), Social and Economic Development: Issues and Challenges in India (Edited by Prof Syed Naushad Ahmad, Prof Ateeque Ahmad and Prof Nizamuddin Khan), Irrigation Dynamics and Agricultural Development in India (By Dr Nikhat Bano, Prof Ateeque Ahmad and Dr Syed Kausar Shamim), Regional Implications of Green Revolution (By Dr Naima Umar) and Environmental Impact Assessment and Health (By Dr Nikhat Bano).

A Programme Souvenir, Proceedings of the Conference (Edited by Prof Ateeque Ahmad, Prof Sayeed Ahmad Khan, and Prof Syed Naushad Ahmad) and latest volume of ‘The Geographer’ were also released.

Prof S Naushad Ahmad conducted the programme, while Prof Sayeed Ahmad Khan proposed the vote of thanks.
