Key takeaways
Presidential candidate Abdul Waheed has asked where AMUSU's budget of the last eight years has gone.In 2020, a former AMUSU president said the union fund held about Rs 22 to 26 lakh, unused. No current figure or accounts of the fund have been made public.

Abdul Waheed, a Ph.D. scholar in the Department of Urdu and a candidate for President in the AMU Students’ Union (AMUSU) election 2026-27, has asked where the union’s budget for the last eight years has gone. AMU has had no elected students’ union since the 2018-19 session, and polling for the new union is on 5 November.

What Abdul Waheed asked

In a video posted on Instagram, in which Waheed is tagged, the question is put plainly: “AMUSU ke pichle 8 saal ka budget kahaan hai?” (Where is AMUSU’s budget of the last eight years?) The post says that if the money was used, students should be told where, and that “ek-ek rupaye ka hisab” (an account of every rupee) should be placed before them. It calls for a “transparent AMUSU” and “accountability now”.

The video was posted by the account fauzan_farooqui and tags Abdul Waheed’s official account.

What is known about the AMUSU fund

  • 2020 figure: In April 2020, former AMUSU president Dr Maskoor Ahmad Usmani wrote to the then Vice-Chancellor, who is the union’s patron, saying the Students’ Union fund held about Rs 22 to 26 lakh that was lying unused because no election had been held. He asked that it be spent on PPE and medical supplies during Covid-19, as reported by National Herald.
  • No elected union since 2019: The last AMUSU was elected for 2018-19. Without office-bearers, there has been no union body to present accounts to students.

What is not known

  • How much is in the union fund today
  • Who has managed it since 2019, and whether any of it has been spent
  • Whether audited accounts of the fund exist for these years

AMU has not published accounts of the Students’ Union fund for this period, and The Aligarian could not find any public statement from the university on it. We will add the university’s response if it gives one.

A question for every candidate

Whoever wins on 5 November will take charge of the union and its fund. The Aligarian invites all AMUSU 2026-27 candidates to say whether they will publish the union’s accounts if elected. We will publish their answers in the same way.

Note for candidates

The Aligarian does not support any candidate. We report what candidates say so voters can compare them. Any AMUSU 2026-27 candidate can send us a statement, and we will cover it in the same way.
