Cabinet and Court candidates of the AMU Students’ Union election 2026 protested at the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) office on Saturday, 7 November, demanding a transparent recount of the Cabinet votes. The university’s Grievance Redressal Cell will hear one candidate’s complaint at the DSW office today, 8 November, at 2 pm.
What happened at the DSW office
According to sources, several Cabinet and Court candidates, along with some union office bearers, gathered at the DSW office on Saturday evening. Videos shared on social media show a packed room, with candidates raising their demand before university officials.
The candidates allege that mistakes may have been made while counting the votes for the Cabinet posts. They want the ballots counted again, in a process they can see and trust.

What the Grievance Redressal Cell has said
In a notice dated 7 November 2026, the Grievance Redressal Cell, chaired by the Dean Students’ Welfare, said it had examined a grievance filed by Cabinet candidate Tayyab Sherwani (Ballot No. 15). The complaint was addressed to the Chief Election Officer, with a copy to the DSW, and the Cell took it up at a meeting at 4 pm the same day.
The Cell has decided to start proceedings. It has asked Sherwani to bring evidence for his claim that “there is a strong possibility of minor human error during physical sorting, tallying, or the rejection of doubtful ballots”.
- Hearing: Sunday, 8 November 2026, 2 pm
- Venue: Office of the Dean Students’ Welfare, AMU
- Who must appear: Cabinet candidate Tayyab Sherwani, in person, with proof
What happens next
The university has not said whether a recount will take place. That depends on what the Cell decides after hearing the complaint and looking at the evidence. Until then, the declared Cabinet results stand.
The AMUSU election was held on 5 November 2026, the first in eight years. For the full list of office bearers since 1884, see our AMU Students’ Union hub. We will update this story after the hearing.
